When to Replace Your Furnace or AC Instead of Repairing It Again

Every system reaches a point where you’re spending good money keeping it limping through one more season. Here’s how we think about it — the same way we’d tell a neighbor.

The 15-year mark

If your furnace or AC is fifteen years or older and you’re calling for a repair most seasons, replacing it usually costs you less over time. Not because the old one “can’t be fixed,” but because you stop paying for repeat repairs, your energy bills come down, and you get a system that actually keeps up. Under about ten years and in good shape, a repair is often the smarter money.

Add up the last two years

Pull the number in your head: what have you spent on this system in the last couple of years, and how many times were you without heat or cooling when you needed it? If that number is climbing and the unit is old, that’s the signal. A single expensive repair on a system near the end of its life is often money you’d rather put toward a new one.

The honest part

Plenty of times we look at a system and tell the homeowner it has good life left — so save your money and keep it running. We’re not going to talk you into a new unit you don’t need. But when it genuinely is time, replacing it before it dies in January (or on the first 90-degree day) means you decide on your terms, not in a panic.
